First Annual Journal of Austrian Studies Graduate Student Essay Prize Winner


The Austrian Studies Association is pleased to announce the winner of the first annual Journal of Austrian Studies Graduate Student Essay Prize.

This year’s theme was “Race, Ethnicity, and Identity in the Austrian Context.” The prize goes to Theresa Eisele (Kulturstiftung Schloss Wiepersdorf; Ph.D., University of Vienna)for her essay “Josephine Baker, Vienna, and the Jews: Entangled Theater History of African American and Jewish Relations.”

An honorable mention was awarded to Matthew Johnson (University of Chicago) for his essay, “Off-Translation,”: Bertha Pappenheim’s Yiddish-German.”

Dr. Eisele will receive $250 and her essay will appear in the Summer 2022 issue of the Journal of Austrian Studies. She and Mr. Johnson will also receive a year’s membership in the Austrian Studies Association, which includes a subscription to the Journal of Austrian Studies.

Please watch for the 2022 prize theme to be announced at the annual conference of the Austrian Studies Association, April 12-15, 2022, New Orleans, Louisiana.

Graduate students and those who have received their Ph.D. no earlier than 2020 and who do not currently hold a tenure-track or permanent faculty position are invited to submit an essay for consideration.
