The Austrian Studies Association is pleased to announce the winner of the annual Journal of Austrian Studies Graduate Student Essay Prize.
This year’s theme was “(Un-) Making the Human: Explorations of an Embattled Category in the Austrian Context.”
The prize goes to Christian Schuetz (Washington University in St. Louis) for his essay “Assimilation as Abjection: Subjectivity Formation and Self-Fetishization Against the Anthropological Difference in Franz Kafka’s ‘Ein Bericht für eine Akademie.’”
Mr. Schuetz will receive $250 and his essay will appear in the Journal of Austrian Studies. He will also receive a year’s membership in the Austrian Studies Association, which includes a subscription to the Journal of Austrian Studies.
Please watch for the 2023 prize theme to be announced at the annual conference of the Austrian Studies Association, April 14-16, 2023, at Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania.
Graduate students and those who have received their Ph.D. no earlier than 2021 and who do not currently hold a tenure-track or permanent faculty position are invited to submit an essay for consideration.
